ADB Calls for Stronger Social Protections in Wake of Global Economic Crisis

News Release

MANILA, PHILIPPINES - Asian Development Bank (ADB) President Haruhiko Kuroda said Wednesday that the global economic crisis has shown that stronger social protection programs are needed if the Asia and Pacific region is to achieve sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

"The global economic crisis made us acutely aware of the extreme vulnerability of individuals to various sources of risk. These include economic shocks, loss of employment, disability and illness, natural disasters, conflict, and environmental degradation," Mr. Kuroda said at the opening of a social protection conference in Manila.
