Press Release
PHNOM PENH, 27 May 2010: Cambodian government is determined to ensure transparency and good governance, recognizing that such practices will help maximize the benefits the mining sector can bring to the Cambodian society. The commitment came out of the two-day International Mining Conference on 26-27 May.
The conference – “Staking a Claim for Cambodia” – was the first of its kind and brought together some 300 participants, including national and international experts, companies, development partners, non-governmental organizations, and other stakeholders, to discuss the country’s mineral resources sector and steps needed to “responsibly” develop it for the greater good of its citizens.
The ministry hosted the conference in partnership with UNDP Cambodia. Speakers and panelists shared experiences and international best practices to help maximize positive impacts from the mining sector on Cambodia’s socio-economic progress while also ensuring environmental sustainability in the future.
Cambodia is considered to be a part of a region of high geological potential for development of gold, copper, bauxite and other mineral resources. If managed transparently, with proper environmental safeguard measures, and in consultation with local communities, the potential resource wealth could make a significant contribution to poverty reduction and progress towards the Cambodia Millennium Development Goals (CMDGs).
Regional experts from Mongolia, Vietnam, China and Laos presented experiences from their respective countries in the mining sector the sessions. Leading mining experts from around the world will also be present to share their vast knowledge and experiences.
